About Wayanad
         
 

Wayanad was formed on November 1 , 1980 as the 12th district, carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur districts. The etymology of the word Wayanad is Vayal (paddy) Naad (land); 'Land of Paddy Fields'. There are many indigeneous tribals in this area. It is set lofty on the majestic Western Ghats with altitudes ranging from 700 to 2100 Metres above mean sea level.

 
 

Meenmutty Falls
Meenmutty Falls is located 29 km from Kalpetta in Wayanad District. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 metres.Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike though the jungle from the main Ooty Road. he path is quiet dangerous and tiresome.but the waterfalls is worth it.

Wayanad Wild life Sanctury in Muthanga
Established in 1973, the Wayanad wild life sanctuary is contiguous to the protected area network of Nagarhole and Bandipur of Karnataka on the north-east and Muthumalai of TamilNadu on south-east. Rich in bio-diversity, the sanctuary is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which has been established with the specific objective of conserving the biological heritage of the region.

Edakkal caves
The Edakkal Caves are at Ambukutty Mala near ambalavayal. The discovery of the cave and its identification as a prehistoric site were quite accidental by F. Fawcett, the then superintendent of police. An enthusiast in pre-history, Fawcett went around exploring the Wayanad high ranges which eventually led to the discovery of the Edakkal rock-shelter in 1894. He identified the site as a habitat of neolithic people on the basis of the nature of representations on the cave walls, which appeared to him as engravings made of neolithics celts. Edakkal rock engravings stand out distinct among the magnitude of prehistoric visual archives of paintings and graphic signs all over the world.

   
 

Pookkode lake
3 km south of Vythiri. The perennial fresh water lake, nestled among wooded hills, is a only one of its kind in Kerala. Set in a beautiful valley and surrounded by evergreen forests and wooded hills, Pookot is one of Wayanad's top visitor draws. This natural lake near Lakkidi is just a short distance off the NH-212. It has been developed as a recreational centre having boating facilities, children's park, fresh water aquarium etc. It is a good setting for day outings with family.

Banasura sagar project
Sagar Dam is located 21 km from Kalpetta, in Wayanad District of Kerala in the Western Ghats. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia. Banasura Sagar Dam, which impounds the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River, is part of the Indian Banasurasagar Project consisting of a dam and a canal project started in 1979.The goal of the project is to support the Kakkayam Hydro electric power project and satisfy the demand for irrigation and drinking water in a region known to have water shortages in seasonal dry periods.

Chembra Peak
Chembra is located near the town of Meppady and is 14 km west of Kalpetta. Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2100m above sea level and is ideal for trekking. A heart shaped lake en route to the top of the peak is a major tourist attraction. The lake is believed to have never dried up.the surrounding areas offer exceptational photo oppurtunities .cambing on the peak is an unforgettable experience.district tourisum promotion council provides guides ,sleeping bags canwases,huts and tukking impliments on here.

Kanthan Para
A beautiful water fall of about 30m. in height.relatvelly smaller than sentinel rockfalls,and rather less frequented kanthan para and its surrondigs offer a very pleasant sight a easy hike away from the main road.

Neeli mala View Point
Closer to vaduvan chal,neelimala ia aexcellent venue fro trekking with lots off stimulating trails.the summit of this hill affroads agreate view of the cascadinig meenmutty falls end .the beautiful valley in its forground.

Sentinal Rock Water Fall
Soochipara near Meppadi 22 kms. south of Kalpetta. A three step water fall of more than 200m inheight with a fantastic scenary provides for white water rafting, swimming, bathing, etc., The tree top huts at Soochipara will give unique view of the valleys of Western Ghats. It is also an ideal place for rock climbing.

Pakshipathalam
Pakshipathalam in the Brahmagiri hills at Thirunelli and is situated 1740 mtr above the sea level. Rare species of birds can be sighted from the watch tower of this bird sanctuary. Pakshipathalam is a formation of large boulders, some as tall as two storeyed buildings. The deep caves found here are home to a wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive species of plants. The journey involves an arduous 7 km trek through thick forest commencing at Thirunelly. District Tourism Promotion Council arranges vehicle, guides, camping equipments, etc.

Pazhassi Tomb
Pazhassi Tourist Resort at Mananthavady. There is a good aquarium here. Coin-operated toys for children and boating facilities for tourists are available here. The memorial of Veera Pazhassi Raja known as the Lion of Kerala- who organised guerilla warfare against British East India company is situated at Mananthavady. The Pulpally cave near by is where the Pazhassi took refuge until he was captured by the British. He was downed in a ferocious encounter that took place at Mavilanthode in the last days of 1805. Pazhassi's tomb marks the point where he was cremated. Pazhassi museum is located nearby where a sword, which is believed to be of Pazhassi's era is kept.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated along the northern ridge of Wayanad (bordering Coorg district of Karnataka), Tholpetty is much similar to Muthanga in terms of flora and fauna. The best season to visit both the sanctuaries is between November and May. The Wildlife Sanctuary,Tholpetty, near Mananthavady is contiguous with Nagarhole of Karnataka state.

Thirunelli Temple
32 kms north east of Mananthavady and 66 kms from Kalpetta. Nestled amidst mountains and forests, this ancient riverside temple is a fine specimen of classical Kerala temple architecture. It is Known as Thekkan Kashi/Dakshina Kashi (Kasi of the South) and surrounded by Kambamala, Karimala and Varadiga. Legend is that this temple was dedicated by the Creator, Lord Brahma to propitiate the Preserver, Lord Vishnu. The idols is in the form of Chathurbhuja. The Shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. The crystal clear water of the Papanashini river running downhill add to the enchantment of the place. This temple draws pilgrims from allover, primarily for ancestral rites. A short walk from Thirunelli temple is the clear mountain spring known as Papanasini.

Chain Tree
This large Ficus tree, bound by a prominent chain is an interesting excursion, approximately 15 kms. from Kalpetta. It is said that a British Engineer, with the aid of a tribal guide named Karinthandan, found the difficult mountain terrain into Wayanad. Eager to take the credit for the discovery, the Engineer conveniently killed his guide, whose soul, according to the legend, constantly haunted subsequent travelers. It is believed that a priest chained the troublesome spirit onto this tree and hence name the Chain tree.

Valliyur Kave Bagavathy Temple
8 kms east of Mananthavady. The temple is dedicated to the mother goddess manifest in the three principal forms of Vana Durga, Bhadrakali and Jala Durga.The two week long festival in February/March is a major event attended by thousands of people.

Sunrise Valley
20 km south of Sulthan Bathery Kaduva Kuzhi at Ambalavayal: 15 km south of Sulthan Bathery Karappuzha Dam: 13 km northeast of Kalpetta Jain Temple, Sulthan Bathery: 25 km from Kalpetta. As the name suggests, Sunrise Valley is a great place to watch the rising and setting sun amidst dramatic mountain scenery. The place also offers a panoramic view of the valley beneath with the river Chaliyar meandering gracefully.

Phantom Rock
Located close to Ambalavayal town, Phantom Rock, named so because of its skull head shape, is locally called Cheengery Mala. The immediate surroundings offer excellent photo opportunities. Distance: Kalpetta: 26 kms. Sultan Battery:12 kms. Mananthavadi: 43 kms
Wayanad HeritageMuseum
The Rakthakanta Swamy Temple and the annual cattle fair held in the Malayalam month of Meenam are the main attractions of Omallur. People from all around Kerala and also many other states participate in the fair.

Pallikunnu Church
Dedicated to the Lourdes Matha, Pallikkunnu Church was established in 1905 at the initiative of a French missionary Fr. Jeffrine. An interesting aspect of this church is that it has several rituals and practices similar to those prevalent in Hindu temples. The annual 2 week Perunnal festival in early February draws large throngs of devotees from other parts of Kerala, as well as outside.
