Kappad Beach
On 27 May 1498, Vasco Da Gama landed in Kappad Beach (also known as Kappakkadavu) with three vessels and 170 men. Sixteen km north of Kozhikode by Kannur road, a small road from Tiruvangoor leads to this beach of historical importance. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea, is an added attraction. the temple on the rock is belived to be 800 years old.
Kuttichira
The stone inscriptions found the Muccunti mosque at kuttichira revel an intresting aspect in the history of zamorins of kozhikode and there patronage of islam in kerala.the achitecture of this other old moques in kozhikode bear greate resemblance to the trypical hindu temple complex with pillers,ventilators and huge tanks as well as decorative features such as stylised floral carvings and geomatric designs.
Krishna Menon Museum
The Krishna Menon Museum has a section in honour of the great Indian leader V.K Krishna Menon, whose personal belongings and souvenirs gifted by this world leader are exhibited here. the art section of this museum which has an assemblage of authentic Kerala mural paintings and vivid examples of modern art apart from intricately carved wood and ivory objets d'art. Most notable in the Art section and in fact, a leading feature of the museum is a collection of original oil paintings of the renowned maestro by Raja Ravi Varma and his brother Raja Raja Varma. A collection of stone sculptures is also on display here.
Manachira squre
Mananchira Square is at the heart of Kozhikode. Mananchira Maithan is managed by the Corporation of Kozhikode. This square is situated around the Manachira pool. Mananchira Square has green grass that is carpeted across the area and you have many old Kerala type buildings in the place. Mananchira Square has an open ground with a musical fountain that attracts many visitors every day.
Marine Research Aquarium
Located at westhill beach run by central marine fisheries research instiutute and governed by indian council of agricultural research (ICAR). Marine Research Aquarium is fast becoming Amajor attraction.diverse varieties of marine ornamental fishes are exhibited.working hours 10am 5 pm.
Kozhikode Beach
The beauty and serenity of Kozhikode beach is not yet exploited to develop it into a tourist centre. Still people from all around gather here to enjoy the sunset and it is a popular retreat for local people. Two sea piers almost 125 years old extending well inside the sea are a speciality. Lion’s club, children’s park make evening pleasant for visiting families. Fishermen with their small rowing boats entering the sea, fighting the waves and returning with varieties of fish is worth watching.marine water aquarium are added attraction.
Science Centre and Planetarium
Regional Science Centre and Planetarium was established in 1997 at Calicut in Kerala. Regional Science Center and Planetarium is situated at Jaffar Khan Colony in Kozhikode. The Science Center offers a deep insight in to amazing and exciting dimensions of Science. The Planetarium provides a realistic picture of the mysteries of the universe, the planets and the galaxies. Daily shows are at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00 hrs. but it has to be remembered that the center remains closed on every Mondays and on the occasion of Onam and Diwali
Thusaragiri
Thusharagiri is 48 kms. from Kozhikode. The waterfalls and streams amidst the hilly regions are really a feast to eyes. This natural beauty spot exists 11 kms from Kodenchery which is abound in plantations of rubber, aracanut, coconut, pepper, ginger, and spices of all sort.thusaragiri illitratly meaning’ snow capped mountains’ and effectionately called the ‘kodaikkanal ‘of north kerala is famed for it lush green vegitation.
Kallai
Kallai was known as the world’s best timber trading centre. Even now, it is the place for timber trade in Malabar. Today, though some business does take place, hard times have fallen on the timber trade and Kallai is just a shadow of its past.Asteel bridge built by the british is still intact here.
Sarowaram
Sarovaram’ meaning ‘idyllic lake’. 2 km from kozhikode town. the multi-crore eco-friendly bio-park in Kozhikode is a fully government owned project meant for conservation of the wetlands through eco-friendly tourism interventions by sustainable methods. The wetlands are rich with 7 mangrove spices, 29 mangrove associates and fauna ranging from protozoa to Otter. It is also a congenial habitat for 20 types of water birds, 2 bird associated with water, 3 birds associated with waterlogged reeds and 9 land birds. The 11 km long canal connects Korappuzha and Kallai rivers and brings in periodic influx of saline water which makes the habitat ideal for mangrove, fisheries and other biota.
Kakkayam
A dam site of unique beauty and abundant wild life situate 45 kms. from Kozhikode. Kakkayam offers a Muscle flexing and challenging trekking and rock climbing through river path. The eye-catching Urakkuzhi (oorakuzhi) waterfall is the major attraction.
Kuttiyadi
29 km. from Vadakara, Kuttiadi acknowledged the supremacy of the Kottayam Raja, whose fortified palace stands on a hill. During the Pazhassi rebellion, Kuttiadi, which commanded one of the chief passes to Wayanad was of great strategic importance. In 1957, the shafts of two golden swords supposed to have been used by Pazhassi Raja were unearthed. Overlooking Kuttiadi and other regions is the 1758 m. height Banasura peak, named after the giant demon Banasura, who is supposed to have built a fort on the summit. Now the name of Kuttiadi connected with the Hydro-Electric project in Kuttiadi river.
Feroke
Earlier, Tipu Sultan named the place Farookhabad which turned into Feroke. local people also say that this name was derived from Paravanmukku, meaning area where Paravans (A tribe in this part of the country) used to stay; later called Feroke. Feroke is the cradle of the tile industry in Kerala. The rapid rivers from the Western Ghats after passing through forests carry the clay which is the raw-material for tiles, pottery and ceramic wares.
Vellarimala
A beautiful location for trekking. The trekking starts from a water fall and pass through lush green forest. Overnight stay in tented accommodations is required, as it is not safe to trek at night. On the top of the hill it is so chill that warm cloths are required. Most of the hill range falls in the Meppady Forest Range of South Wayanad Division with some parts falling Thamarassery Range of Kozhikode Division. They are semi-contigous with Nilgiris or Nilgiri Hills in Tamilnadu separated by the Chaliyar Valley. The plateau of Wayanad lies on the eastern slopes of these hills and merges gradually with the Mysore plateau.
Peruvannamuzhi
The dam site 60 kms. from Kozhikode girdled with mountains is an abode of beauty, calm & serenity. Cruise in a speed boat or lazily walk around through thick foliage. A crocodile farm run by the forest Department situates close to the reservoir. There exists a 'Smarakathottam' within this reservoir bearing the heroes of nation building. The reservoirs here provide facilities for speed and slowboat cruises. Uninhabited islands, a bird sanctuary and a crocodile farm add to the charm of the place.
S.M Street
Sweat Meat street, popularly known as S.M. Street with its cross roads, is the busiest shopping spot of Kozhikode. Old bakery shops here are known for the famous Kozhikode halwa and banana chips. Birth Place of Kunhali Marakar : The Marakars were admirals of Zamorines who valiantly resisted the Portuguese on high seas. Kunhali marakkar built a fort on the southern bank of Mooriad river which was completely destroyed by Portuguese with the help of Zamorins for various reasons. The place is known today as Kottakkal. It is 46 Kms North of Kozhikode.
Nadapuram
Nadapuram is second only to Ponnani from the point of view of Islamic culture. It is located 18 kms. North-East of Vadakara.
Malabar boat House
For luxury boating and exploring pristine back waters of Kozhikode. the first fully newly built House Boats of Kerala. These are stationed at Purakkattiri, close to Purakkattiri Bridge on Ullery - Perambra road. 10 kms. from Kozhikode.
Thikotti LightHouse
The light house which overlooks velliyamkallu off moodady coast was built after a shipwreck,the remains of which can still be seen here. The region around the velliyamkallu rock is the transit home of migatory birds.
Velliyamkallu
A massive rock "Velliyamkallu" associated with the valiant Kunhali Marakkar Situates 13 kms. off Payyoli Beach. The rock though much dreaded by navigators was safe ground for the Marakar to attack the invading Portuguese. The fisher folk looks at it with awe and fear. However., it is worth exploring it to see for oneself the beautiful figures nature has engraved on it. It was on this rock that Marakars killed the whole crew of a ship belonging to the Portuguese.
Budha Vihar
The Budha Vihar situated at Customs Road near south beach of Kozhikode is a marked example of the presence of Budhists in Kozhikode. There is a good collection of writings on Budha’s writings on birthlife and teaching.
Kirtads
Kirtads or the Kerala Institute of Research and Development of Scheduled Tribes and Castes is a tribal study centre located at a distance of around 9 km from Kozhikode. The library here contains mostly literature on tribals. There is also a museum in this study centre. The Study Centre is open everyday from 10 am to 5 pm, except on Sundays, second Saturdays and public holidays.
JainTemple
An old Jain Temple in Trikkovil lane close to Valiyangadi speaks of the early presence of Jains in this trading city. There are two temples in this compound and the northern one is considered to be older. The portico is adorned with beautiful carvings based on puranic themes and the interiors beautifully painted.
Thacholimanikkoth
A Kalari belonging to Tacholi Othenan, the legendary hero of the ballad of Malabar called "Vadakkan Pattu" can be seen at a short distance from Vadakara. A monument and Kalari still exists at this place which is 3 kms. away from Vadakara. Every year martial arts festival is held in the month of March or April.
Vadakara
This ancient place is now the headquarters of the taluk as well as the municipality of that name. There is a ruined fort in the town. Vadakara was the scene of many exploits of Tacholi Othenan, the hero of the ballads of north Malabar (Vadakkan Pattukal). Five kms. South-East of Vadakara in Memunda amsom, is the Lokanarkavu which has three rock-cut caves in its vicinity. Annual ceremonies are conducted in memory of Othenan, whose birth place is Manikkoth near Meppayil.Vadakara (Vadakkekara) is so called because of its location just north (Vadakku) of Kotta river. The Orkattery cattle fair is held between 25th January and 2nd February at Orkattery 6.45 kms. from Vadakara.
Mumchunthi Palli
A 13th century Vattezhuthu inscribed on a stone slab can be seen in this mosque. this is the oldest of the three mosques existing at Kuttichira, in Kozhikode town. The inscription narrates the donation of the property to the mosque by a Zamorine.
Lokanarkavu
The wooden carvings in this temple is unique and survives the challengers of times. Even from the times of Kadathanadan kings, this temple was well known. The legendary hero "Thacholi Othenan" is associated with this temple. Temple is situated 6 kms. East of Vadakara Town. The main festival is in the month of March or April.
Mishkal Masjid (Kuttichira)
Mishkal Masjid at Kuttichira in Kozhikode town is one of the oldest mosques, which is architecturally beautiful. This four storey structure built on wooden pillars proudly proclaims the architectural excellence of yester years. In 1510 the Portuguese attacked this Mosque and burned down some portion. The burned portions can even now be seen, on top floors. This mosque has been named after the rich trader who built it.
Mother of God Church
This church built in the roman architectural style dates back to 1513 A.D and is the only one of its kind in kerala.aportrait of St.mary,more than 200 years old makes it a famous pilgrim centre. There is no other church in the whole of Kerala built in the same fashion.
St. Mary's Church
The church was founded in 1860 for the civil members of the collectorate and the english military. In September 1863 the construction was completed and it was used for service.in the cemithery adjacent to the church, there is atomb dated 1717.
Sree Valayanadu Devi Temple
Situated at Govindapuram about 6kms away from Kozhikode is the Valayanadu Bhagavathy Temple, renowned for its unique architectural beauty. It is one among the Saktheya Temples in India and the presiding deity Chandika also known as ‘Mahartham’ and ‘Kalasarppini’ is supposed to be a goddess from Kashmir. Here the poojas (temple worship) are carried out along with Ruruji worship. Moosad, the temple priest follows Kashmiri way of worshipping and performs the Pooja according to certain rules. Another unique features are the 'Sreechakra' in the sanctum which was designed by Sivayogi Thayyavur Sivasankar and the Saptha School of architecture. 'Guruthy Tharpanam', an important ritual of this temple is done from the alleyway of 'Kshethrapalan'. Apart from the main Devi deity, there are also the idols of Lord Shiva, Ayyappa, Vigneshwara, and Bagavathy. The annual festival of the temple begins on the day of Karthika of Makaram and it continues for seven days. During the Mandala season there will be 'Kalamezhuthupattu' from 1st of Malayalam month Vrichikam and will last for forty one days.
Tali Temple
Built in the 14th Century by Swamy Thirumulpad,the zamorien with in his palace complex. This temple was the venue of Revathy Pattathanam. This temple is a fine example of the total integration that can exist between wood and laterite which is a remarkable feature of the Kerala architecture.the annual cultural and intellectual event.
Azhakodi Devi Temple
Situated in thiruthiyad 1 km distance from kozhikode stadium . The annual festival of the temple begins on Navarathri. On this day Fireworks, devotional songs, Thayambaka, Gita chanting are there.
Sree Kanteswara Kshethram (Temple)
Installed by the great spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru, Sree Kanteshwara Temple is located in the southwest corner of the Kozhikode stadium at a distance of 1.5 km from the railway station. Devoted to Lord Shiva, this temple also known as Puthiyambalam has a Shiva Lingam in the Dhakshinamoorthi Sankalpa as the main deity. Lord Subramanian, Sree Ganapathi, Sree Dharma Shastha, Maha Vishnu, Bhagavathi and Navagraha are the upadevathas (other deities) here. It is believed that centuries earlier a temple named Nalliswara Kshetram, had existed at the exact place where the Sree Kanteswara Temple is now situated.
Varakkal Devi Temple
Located on the shores of Arabian Sea, atop a hill near the West Hill railway station. the temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is supposed to be the 108th and last Devi temple built by Sree Parasurama, the legendary creator of Kerala. It is believed that Parasurama ploughed this area out of divine insight and Devi (Goddess) with all her mercy appeared before him. 28 steps lead to the temple. The main festival here is the Vavu Bali, when thousands congregate to perform the ancestral obsequies. On this day the sea is found to be surprisingly calm as if facilitating the religious observances.
Ponmeri Temple
Lord Shiva is the main deity at Ponmeri temple. This temple and the Sri Krishna temple at Karatt have flamboyant paintings portraying 'palazhimathanam' .the story of churning of the ocean of milk from the Puranas.
Pisharikkavu
Located at 28-km away from Kozhikode town and 2-km north of Koilandi. The temple has two Sreekovils (shrines), one devoted to Lord Shiva and other to Goddess Devi. The centuries old temple has exquisite wood carvings and mural paintings which is believed to be the oldest in the state. Valia vattala guruthi, Udayasthama pooja, Niramalya, Rekthapushpanjali, Palpayasom are some of the rituals and offerings here. ishakarikavu temple was built by the Vaisya community who had migrated from southern Kerala. Vaisya's were a trading community who lived in the Kollam district. The seven day annual fiesta of the Pishakarikavu temple is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Medam (April- May). Moossadu, a sub cast of Brahmins fixes the date of Kodiyettu (flag hoisting) and the rite is known as 'Kaliyattam Kurikkal'. Temple arts such as Thayambaka, pachavadyam, padhakom, Ottanthullal, Chakyarkoothu are performed during the festive days and on the final day, the main idol, 'Nandhakam Vaal' (sword) is taken out of the temple in a grand procession. The festival concludes with 'Kaliyattam'.
Mannur Temple
Located 12 km away from Kozhikode at Kadalundi village, Sri Mannur Maha Shiva Kshethram or Mannar Temple is one of the 108 renowned temples in Kerala, believed to be built by the great sage Parashurama. Although no sturdy evidence is available, scholars say that this temple is more than 1000 years of old. Certain inscriptions on the wall of the temple date back to 400 years. The exquisitely carved Gajaprathista (elephant) styled laterite structure is more than two centuries old. The foundation is made of granite and the red laterite stone walls are beautifully carved. Here Lord shiva is depicted as Aghoramurthy. |
