About Kannur
         
 

Kannur district derived its name from the location of its headquarters at Kannur town. Kannur was formerly known as Cannanore. Kannur is popularly known as the city of Looms and Lores. Kannur is the land of the famous performing art Theyyam. The district has a high tourism potential. The St. Angelos in the Kannur Cantonment, which was constructed in 1505, and the mosque at Madayi constructed in 1124, using marble brought from Mecca, attracts plenty of tourists. Kannur is a land of myths and legends,where the bounteous beauty beckons you The sugary beaches and palm trees makes it a favourite destination of tourists.

 
 

Muzhappilangad Beach
The only drive-in-beach in Kerala, where you can drive an entire length of 4 K.m. Protected by the black rocks from the currents of the deep, the shallow waters of this long, clean beach is a swimmer's paradise. It is located parallel to National Highway 17 between Kannur and Thalassery. The enchanting ambience of the beautiful Muzhappilangad beach invites one to swim, sunbathe, or just laze around. From Muzhappilangad, one can view the Dharmadam Island or the Green Island. Approximately 100-200 m south of the beach there is a private island called Dharmadam Island (Pacha Thuruthu in Malayalam, which translates to Green Island in English). It is possible to walk to the island during low tide. Since the late 90's, the beach has seen a steady influx of European tourists during winter.

St. Angelo's Fort
St. Angelo's Fort, built in 1505 the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, is situated near the sea coast and is about 2 km away from Kannur town. Even now, it is in a fairly good state of preservation, though parts of it have collapsed. A few obsolete guns can be seen at the place. Main Attraction of the St.Angelo’s Fort is Massive architecture. Its also known as the Kannur fort. Kerala is a massive fort built by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francisco De Almeida. It was constructed in the year 1505. St. Angelo's Fort is a protected monument today as declared by the Archaeological Survey of India. St. Angelo's fort of Kannur has changed many hands before finally being captured by the British in the year 1790. The fort is a magnificent structure with massive walls and a deep moat. A mesmerizing view of the Moppila Bay never fails to enthrall visitors. The fort is situated very close to the sea and is separated from the sea by a strong sea wall. One can also get a great view of the Dharmadam Island that is located at a distance of 100 meters from the shore. The bay is a modern fishing harbor that is equipped with the latest technology that is required in the fishing industry.

   
 

Mappila bay
Situated near the St. Angelo's Fort, the Mappila bay has a historical background. Today Mappila bay has turned into a modernised fishing harbour. Boating in the sea, if the weather permits, will be an unforgettable experience. The bay was famous during the Kolathiri's regime as a commercial harbour that linked Kolathunadu with Lakshadweep and foreign countries, in imports. On one side of the bay is Fort St. Angelo, built by the Portuguese in the 15th century and the other side is the Arakkal Palace. The remains of a temple and fort at Mappila Bay, are all tourist attractions. If the sea is not rough, it is worth taking a boat trip.

Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu
The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is situated 18 kms. Away from Kannur town. It Is one of the best known snake parks in the country . The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of snakes, most of which are becoming extinct gradually. The Park houses a large variety of snakes and other small animals, including the Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra,Russell's viper, Krait and various pit vipers. There is also a large collection of non-poisonous snakes including Pythons. The Snake Park, set up by the Visha Chikista Kendra, is regularly visited by both foreign and domestic tourists. The Kendra also offers effective treatment for snake bites.

Meenkunnu Beach
Situated at Azhikode, it is hardly a few kilometres from the town. The virgin beach is a tourist's paradise with golden sand and surf. Beach is endowed with coconut trees. It is an extension of Payyambalam beach. The name meenkunnu is a combination of two Malayalam words meen and kunnu. Meen literally means fish and kunnu a small hill.

Pazhassi Dam
The damsite, famous for its scenic beauty, is an ideal retreat for tourists. The D.T.P.C provides pleasure boating faciliaties at the reservoir. While there may not be too much to ?do? at the Pazhassi Dam, it continues to be a favourite with the tourists solely on the basis of its picturesque and quaint setting, which takes the breath away of any traveller. Riding on its fame for being unimaginably beautiful, the Pazhassi Dam draws tourists by a large number every year, from the across the country and different parts of the world.

Payyambalam beach
The Payyambalam beach is one of the beautiful beaches in the State and is an ideal place to spend evenings, irrespepctive of seasons. It has an unbroken coastline of a few kilometres.Take a Tour to Payyambalam Beach and experience the beautiful Arabian Sea from the sandy shores of the Payyambalam Beach. The major attraction of this beach is the beautifully sculpted Mother and Child by Kanayi Kunhiraman. The beautifully landscaped garden next to the beach is also a major crowd puller.

Arakkal Kettu
This was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala.

Dharmadam Island (Green Island)
Dharmadam Island is a small 2 hectare private island in the Kannur District of Kerala, southern India. It lies 100 metres from the mainland at Dharmadam. This island, covered with coconut palms and dense bush is a beautiful sight from the Muzhappilangad beach. During low tide, one can walk out to it from the beach. Permission is required to land on the island as it is privately owned. Dharmadam, known earlier as Dharmapattanam, was a Buddhist stronghold. Dharmadam is located 4 km from the town of Thalassery,17 km from kannur. The Dharmadam Island is an ideal picnic spot.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary
Aralam wildlife sanctuary is the northernmost protected area of Kerala state, situated in the southeast part of Kannur District. The sanctuary area falls in Aralam, Kelakam and Kottiyoor revenue villages and is located in the Northwest slopes of Western Ghats contiguous with the forests of Coorg (Kodagu) district of Karnataka state. The sanctuary receives an annual rainfall of around 3000 mm. The best time to visit the place is October to June. The monsoons last from June to September. This beautiful sanctuary is situated near the Central State farm, which was established by the Government of India in the year 1971. This farm is spread over a vast area of 3060 hectares and is one of the main production centers of crossbred coconut seeds in India. The sanctuary houses a wide variety of flora and fauna. Among the evergreen plants, one can find species like Calophyllum, Cullenia, Elatum and Vellapine among others. Among the semi-evergreen variety, one can find trees like Cinnamomum, Hopea, Mallotus, Zeylanicum and Philippinensis. The animal kingdom flourishes in animals like mouse deer, wild boars, elephants, Indian bison, leopards, jungle cats and various types of squirrels. Apart from the big animals, one can find many snakes and birds in this sanctuary.

Cherukunnu
Cherukunnu is a beautiful village in Kannur district. Famouse Temple Sree Annapoorneswary Temple. Annapurneshwari Temple is facmous for Vishu Villakulsavam which features various religious and entertainment activities, wonderfull fire works which is in April every year. Oliynkara Juma-masjid is famous for the grave of a sufi and people of all relegions pays visit there. Cherukunnu SMDP Hospital populary know as mission hospital is also famous and people from even neighbouring districts come here. Thara got it's name from the orignial nmae "Kathiruvekkum Thara". That is on the occasion of "Nirapara" festival, it is from this place the Nelkathir is being distributed to the villagers

Ezhimala
Ezhimala the imposing mountainous region on the seashore that borders the western part of Payyanur, had played a significant role in the history of the country. This was the head quarters of the Ezhimala Rajya during the Sang period. In Sang literatures, this area is referred to as “ezhil malai” which means high hillock. It is believed that in the later years ezhilmalai reduced to ezhimala. This region is also known as “Elimala”, “Mooshika Sailam”, “Sapta Sailam”,”Mount Eli” and “Mount the Eli” in the history. It was the seat of the renowned Mooshika dynasty. This dynasty reached its zenith of glory during the regime of King Nandan. Ezhimala was a well-known landmark of the ancient sailors. The relics of the past indicate that it was an inhabited region from the very ancient past. The burial chambers, caves, granite-platforms are indications of this.The beautiful beach in Ezhimala and the nearby hillock, which is 286 m high, is a major tourist attraction. Carved stone pillars, an ancient mosque and an ancient burial chamber can be seen at the foot of the hills. The hills are noted for rare medicinal herbs. The Mount Dilli LightHouse here remained a tourist attraction until this area was acquired by the Govt. of India for the development of Naval Academy.

Kunhimangalam
Kunhimangalam is a nearby Panchayath of Payyanur. Beautiful landscapes and lush greenery, magnificence of Ezhimala hillock in the visible span, caressed by the river in the north west, abounded with flourished coconut trees, hillocks, lawns at the east - this scenario illustrates the gorgeous small village known as Kunhimangalam. This village locates in the north end of Kannur district and surrounded by the towns Payyannur and Payangadi. The famous Ezhimala Naval Academy is just couple of kilometers away from this glorious village. This north end piece of land of Kerala has a rich and magnificent heritage. The archeological remaining excavated from here and nearby places prove the existence of a civilized inheritance in this area centuries ago. The “Aduppootti Para” (Umbrella rock) and the recently found caves made of stones take us back to the centuries Old Stone Age civilization. According to our scriptures, during Rama-Ravana warfare, Lord Hanuman, when carrying a piece of Himalaya Mountain for the “Mritasanjeevani” herb, a part of the mountain dropped here in this region which was identified as Ezhimala. As per the study, rare herbal medicines are still exists on this hill.

Kottiyoor
A very ancient Siva Temple situated here attracts lakhs of devotees every year. The Bavali river, Paalukaachi hill, all are tourists places in Kottiyoor. According to the Sthala Purana, it is supposed to be the location of the famous Yagna of Daksha, also called the Daksha Yagna or the Dakshayaagam. Kottiyoor also known as the Dakshina Kashi. Lakhs of people vist this temple during the "Vaisakha" celebrations which happens during the month of June-July every year. Ilaneer Veppu or submitting tender coconuts before the deity is an important ritual during the festival. Thousands of tender coconuts brought by hundreds of devotees from different parts of Malabar is submitted on a special day. The very next day is Ilaneerattam. On this day, main priest pours coconut water collected from the tender coconuts on the idol.

Malayala Kalagramam
One of the famous art & craft academy in northern Kerala. Situated in New Mahe, 29 km away from Kannur town, Malayala Kalagramam (MAKAM) is a centre for art and ideas which aims at providing children and youngsters a Kalari (stage) to practise and perform all forms of fine arts. The centre offers part time as well as full time courses in painting, sculpture, music and dance and art pottery. Yoga and Sanskrit are also taught here. The fraternity centre of the Kalagramam conducts seminars, symposia, extension lectures, in-service programmes and special projects in different fields of art and humanities. The studies help to familiarise the trainees with classical and contemporary trends and techniques in the respective fields of art, to teach them art application and history of art and to enable them to utilise art better in their daily life.Spending a day here with the tutors, students and the exotic library is an enlightening experience for any art lover.

Kizhunna Ezhara Beach
Kizhunna Ezhara Beach is a popular sea coast which lies in the Kannur district in the Kerala state of India. It is a secluded location amidst palm trees and many peace lovers visit this place to get away from the hustle and bustle of their daily lives. The fine sand and the groves of coconut provide a relaxed feeling of peace to a human being. In the evenings, you will fine a number of live performances by classical dancers, presenting the state dance, which is known as‘Kathakali.Kizhunna Ezhara Beach is a beautiful stretch of sand in Kerala, God's own Country. This is one of the most secluded beaches in Kerala. The Beach is palm-fringed stretch of sand where in seclusion you will find peace and retreat from daily drudgeries. The surrounding coconut groves strewn all along the beach promises a relaxed stay.

Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple
Located at a distance of around 20 kilometers from Kannur, the Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan Temple is a very popular pilgrim site and is visited by many devotees on a daily basis. This temple is supposed to have been built by the people of this town who felt the divine presence of Lord Shiva amongst them in the form of a small child. After various miraculous incidents, they built a temple that came to be known as Sri Muthappan temple. This magnificent temple believes in the principle of secularism. People irrespective of their caste, creed and religion can come to this temple to pray. The motto of this temple is "Vasudaiva Kutumbakam", which means the whole world is one family. It is located on the banks of Valapatanam River and provides a visual treat to anyone visiting the temple.

Sree Ramaswami temple
The Sree Ramaswamy Temple is located at Thiruvangad in Thalassery, about 23 kilometers away from Kannur (former Cannanore) town, Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Rama, the temple is locally known as chempadicha melkoora (brass pagoda) because of its copper roofing. It is believed to be the oldest among the four temples dedicated to Lord Sri Rama in the State. The temple houses exquisitely carved sculptures. A vast temple pond is also there in the temple premises. ccording to history, the temple was an outpost of the Thalassery fort in the eighteenth century. The temple premises had often hosted conferences between the officials of the East India Company and local leaders. The annual festival of the temple starts on the Vishu day.The exquisite carvings in the temple are said to have been done nearly 400 years ago.

Pythal Mala
65 km from Kannur town This enchanting hill station, situated 4,500 ft. above sea level near the Kerala - Karnataka border. Abundant in flora and fauna, this place is now being developed as a hill resort. One has to trek 6 kms to reach the top of the hills. There is a proposal to set up a zoo at the top of the hill. The enchanting hill station offers a challenging trek to those inclined to stretch their legs. Trekkers are rewarded by a profusion of exotic flora and fauna and an exhilirating view from the top. Good For trekking JANUARY TO APRIL, It is the tallest hill in Kannur District.

Rajarajeswara temple
Rajarajesawra temple is a beautiful Shiva temple located at Taliparamba in the Kannur district of Kerala. The temple is regarded as one of the 108 ancient Shiva temples of Kerala. It has a prominent place amongst the numerous Shiva temples in South India. If any problem is encountered in the other temples of South India, the devotees seek a solution in this Temple through a prasna, a traditional method of astrological decision making. The prasna is conducted on a peedha (a raised platform) situated outside the temple.The rajarajeshwara temple was built by 'Rajaraja Chola' and the architect was 'Kunjaramallan Rajaraja Perunthachchan.'The quadrangular sanctum has a two tiered pyramidal roof. In front of the sanctum is the namaskara mandapam. The temple has no kodi maram (flagstaff), unlike other temples in Kerala.

Thalassery Fort
Thalaserry fort, located at a distance of 22 kms from Kannur constructed in 1708 AD was the military centre of the British. In 1708 AD, when the British East India Company established its settlement on the Malabar Coast, they built the Thalaserry Fort, as a testimonial to their colonial imperialism. The square fort, with its massive walls, secret tunnels to the sea and intricately carved huge doors, is an imposing structure. The fort was once the nucleus of Thalaserry's development. It is now a historical monument. The Sports Authority Of India Gymnastic Centre, an old Muslim mosque, the Jagannatha Temple and Thiruvangadi Sree Rama Swami temple are other attractions nearby.

Thodeekulam siva temple
Thodeekulam siva temple is situated 34 km from kannur. Located 2 km from kannavam on thalassery-mananthavady road, this temple is famous for its mural paintings. It is believed to have been constructed 2,000 years ago and was closely connected with the Pazhassi Raja family of Kottayam.

Trichambaram Temple
Trichambaram Temple is situated 20 km from Kannur.The deity of the temple is Sre Krishna.The annual temple festival is a colourful event. The fortnight-long festival begins on Kumbham 22 March 6 every year with the kodiyettam (hoisting of a religious flag) and comes to an end on Meenam 6 March 20 with Koodipiriyal (Ending of this festival). In between these dates, for 11 days, thitambu nriththam (a sort of dance with idols of Sri Krishna and Balarama) is held at Pookoth Nada (1 km from Trichambaram temple) The deity of the temple is Krishna. The sculptures on the walls of the sanctum sanctorum are a class by themselves. The temple also contains one of the most exquisite collection of mural paintings in south India. Trichambaram Temple has three ponds attached to it, with the temple for Durga being surrounded by water on all sides.

Valapattanam
Valapattanam is a small town in Kannur district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is about 7 km from Kannur.Valapattanam is an important Muslim settelement area in Kannur. Valapattanam is known for its communal harmony which is an example for the country filled with communal tensions.On one hand one can see the "Kalarivathukkal temple" and on the other hand you have the "Kakkulangara Mosque" lying in close proximity.The long vision of the social leaders and people on the whole has made Valapattanam a land of communal harmony.Valapattanam River is a the largest river in the Kannur area in the state of Kerala. Valapattam town is located on its banks. The famous Muthappan temple is also on the bank of the river.

Gymnastic Center
Thalassery is famous for having given birth to many famous circus artists. The first circus training center set up under the Sports Authority of India, known as the Gymnastic Center is functioning in Thalassery. Experts from India and abroad are working in this center.
